Charlotte history research can begin remotely through the Carolina Room
Phone and virtual reference remain the route into the library's local-history service while on-site appointments are unavailable.

An old address or a family name can open a Charlotte history question long before you know which collection might answer it. The Robinson-Spangler Carolina Room is a starting point for those inquiries, but the current way to reach its staff is remotely.
Charlotte Mecklenburg Library lists the Carolina Room as phone and virtual reference only until further notice. Its September 2026 service update says on-site appointment scheduling ended September 8. Contact the room before making travel plans; the current reference schedule is Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., at 704-416-0150.
The library's Vault also provides an online Robinson-Spangler Carolina Room collection. Search a few variations of a name or place, then record the title, date, identifier and collection information for useful results. A digitized selection is a doorway into the holdings, so an unsuccessful online search does not prove that no relevant record exists.
When asking staff for help, describe the question rather than only requesting everything about a subject. Include the approximate time period, names already checked and what evidence you have. Ask what can be supplied remotely and whether any research or reproduction charges apply before commissioning additional work. Clear questions help turn a promising clue into a research plan.
